As a Staff Engineer on the Accounts Payable team, you will develop and maintain back-end systems that support AP operations, automate processes, enhance user interfaces, and integrate various systems. You will collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality, scalable, and reliable backend solutions.
About This Role (Responsibilities):
As a Staff Engineer, you will:
- Work collaboratively with UX, PM, QA, and engineers to design, build, and maintain high-performance, flexible, and scalable SaaS applications.
- Lead technical initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and provide guidance on best practices for backend development.
- Champion design reviews and help drive the technical direction of the team.
- Develop automated workflows for invoice processing, payment approvals, and vendor management.
- Optimize query performance and ensure data integrity within large datasets.
- Implement machine learning or Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to streamline data extraction from invoices.
- Ensure solutions are scalable, reliable, and secure by collaborating with other engineering teams.
- Advocate best coding practices to raise the bar for your team and the company.
- Build and maintain a high-quality, reliable framework for reporting, analytics, and insights on the Toast platform.
- Document solution designs, write & review code, test, and roll out solutions to production.
- Work with PMs to capture and act on customer feedback to iteratively enhance the customer experience.
- Propose and implement improvements to enhance system efficiency, scalability, and user experience.
- Present findings and insights to senior leadership and stakeholders.

Do You Have the Right Ingredients? (Requirements)
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in software development using C#, Java, Kotlin, or other object-oriented languages.
- Strong experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs, GraphQL endpoints, and integrations with internal and external services.
- Expertise in relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases such as SQL Server, Postgres, DynamoDB with experience in data modeling, query optimization, and performance tuning.
- Experience in scaling backend systems to handle high traffic and large data volumes.
- Strong experience with automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end tests) and test-driven development (TDD).
- Proficiency with data warehousing solutions such as Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.
- Must have experience supporting and debugging large distributed applications.
- Strong knowledge of monitoring, troubleshooting, and improving system performance through logging and metrics.
- Familiarity with data platforms for scalable data processing is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
