About the Role
We’re looking for a Workday Engineer to own and evolve our Workday platform from our Pune, India office. This is a new, high-impact role—you’ll be the primary technical expert responsible for the full integration and configuration lifecycle across HCM, Payroll, Time Tracking, Benefits, Compensation, and Financials.
You’ll transition our Workday operations from a contractor-supported model to dedicated in-house ownership, inheriting a portfolio of integrations and expanding from there. This isn’t just a build role; you’ll own production operations, monitor system health, triage issues, manage semi-annual Workday releases, and continuously improve how our systems talk to each other.
In a sub-1,000-person organization, you won’t be buried in a large team—you’ll have outsized visibility, direct access to stakeholders across HR, Finance, and IT, and the autonomy to shape how Workday works for the business.
What You'll Do
Integration Development & Architecture
- Design, develop, test, and deploy inbound and outbound integrations using Workday Studio, EIBs, Core Connectors, Cloud Connectors, and Web Services (SOAP/REST).
- Build and maintain integrations between Workday and third-party systems across HR, Payroll, Benefits, and Finance using Workato as the primary middleware layer.
- Develop Workday Extend applications and Orchestrations to automate complex, multi-step business processes that go beyond standard configuration.
- Create and maintain custom reports (Advanced, Composite, Matrix) and calculated fields to support integration logic, business reporting, and downstream data needs.
- Author and maintain XSLT/Document Transformations for data format conversion across integration endpoints.
Production Operations & Support
- Own day-to-day production monitoring: scheduled job health, integration error triage, and data validation for all Workday integration points.
- Serve as the go-to technical resource for integration-related incidents, performing root cause analysis and implementing permanent fixes.
- Manage the semi-annual Workday release cycle—review release notes, regression test impacted integrations and configurations, and coordinate with stakeholders on adoption of new features.
- Maintain integration documentation including technical specifications, data mappings, error-handling procedures, and runbooks.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with HR, Payroll, Benefits, Finance, and IT stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Evaluate new Workday features, Extend capabilities, and Community-driven solutions that could improve efficiency or reduce manual effort.
- Advise on integration architecture decisions, data flow design, and security best practices as the organization’s Workday footprint grows.
- Collaborate with US-based teams across time zones; this role requires flexibility for 3–4 hours of overlap with US Eastern hours (typically an adjusted evening schedule a few days per week).
What You Bring
Required
- 5+ years of hands-on Workday technical experience, with deep proficiency in Workday Studio, EIBs, Core Connectors, Cloud Connectors, XSLT/XML/xPath, and Workato (or similar middleware such as MuleSoft or Boomi).
- Experience building integrations across multiple Workday modules: HCM, Payroll, Time Tracking, Benefits, Compensation, and/or Financials.
- Strong experience with API-based integrations, including building and consuming RESTful APIs and Workday Web Services (SOAP/WWS), with familiarity with authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, WS-Security) and payload design (JSON/XML).
- Solid understanding of the Workday data model, security architecture (security groups, domains, business process policies), and tenant management.
- Experience with the Workday release management process, including regression testing and feature evaluation.
- Proven ability to own production support—comfortable monitoring integration health, diagnosing failures, and resolving issues independently.
- Strong documentation practices (technical specs, data flow diagrams, runbooks) and excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders across time zones.
Preferred
- Workday Pro certification in Integrations, Studio, or one or more functional modules (HCM, Payroll, Benefits, Financials).
- Experience with Workday Extend and Orchestrations.
- Exposure to BIRT reporting or Workforce Management Systems.
- Background working in a smaller organization (<1,000 employees) where you were the primary or sole Workday technical resource.
- Familiarity with agile/scrum methodologies and tools like Jira, Zendesk, etc.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Ownership: You're not a cog in a large shared services team. You'll be the Workday technical authority for the organization.
- Breadth: Full-module coverage (HCM & Financials) means broad exposure and accelerated skill development.
- Impact: In a smaller org, your work directly shapes how the business operates — every integration you build is felt across the company.
- Growth: As the first dedicated Workday Engineer, you'll have the opportunity to define standards, build the practice, and potentially grow the team over time.
