Engineering Manager

As a member of the development group, you will be primarily responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the product:  

• Help define and create full stack architecture and deployment using React- Django-AWS in an agile environment with lots of ownership and active mentoring 
• Work with the Product and Design teams to build new features to solve business problems and fill business needs 
• Participate in code reviews to create robust and maintainable code 
• Work in an agile environment where quick iterations and good feedback are a way of life 
• Interact with other stakeholders for requirement, design discussions and for adoption of new features 

• Communicate and coordinate with our support and professional services teams to solve customer issues 
• Help scale our platform as we expand our product across various markets and verticals globally

In this role, you will be part of a growing, global team of data engineers, who collaborate in DevOps mode, in order to enable Merck business with state-of-the-art technology to leverage data as an asset and to take better informed decisions.

The Merck Data Engineering Team is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting automated end-to-end data pipelines and applications on Merck’s data management and global analytics platform (Palantir Foundry, Hadoop, AWS and other components).

The Foundry platform comprises multiple different technology stacks, which are hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure or on-premise Merck’s own data centers. Developing pipelines and applications on Foundry requires:

• Proficiency in SQL / Java / Python (Python required; all 3 not necessary)
• Proficiency in PySpark for distributed computation
• Familiarity with Postgres and ElasticSearch
• Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and basic design/visual competency
• Familiarity with common databases (e.g. JDBC, mySQL, Microsoft SQL). Not all types required

This position will be project based and may work across multiple smaller projects or a single large project utilizing an agile project methodology.

Roles & Responsibilities:
• Develop data pipelines by ingesting various data sources – structured and un-structured – into Palantir Foundry
• Participate in end to end project lifecycle, from requirements analysis to go-live and operations of an application
• Acts as business analyst for developing requirements for Foundry pipelines
• Review code developed by other data engineers and check against platform-specific standards, cross-cutting concerns, coding and configuration standards and functional specification of the pipeline
• Document technical work in a professional and transparent way. Create high quality technical documentation
• Work out the best possible balance between technical feasibility and business requirements (the latter can be quite strict)
• Deploy applications on Foundry platform infrastructure with clearly defined checks
• Implementation of changes and bug fixes via Merck's change management framework and according to system engineering practices (additional training will be provided)
• DevOps project setup following Agile principles (e.g. Scrum)
• Besides working on projects, act as third level support for critical applications; analyze and resolve complex incidents/problems. Debug problems across a full stack of Foundry and code based on Python, Pyspark, and Java
• Work closely with business users, data scientists/analysts to design physical data models

The most obvious experience you need as a WordPress web designer is proficiency in the main programming and markup languages of web design, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, and many others. This technical knowledge will serve as the foundation of any work a WordPress developer engages with.

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:

● Ability to deep dive hands on into coding, building scalable architecture and backend

infrastructure

● Strong knowledge of “how to scale” a product, Dev ops, (Docker/ Kubernetes), Messaging

queues, Testing, Database design, Security Log management system

● Extremely hands-on in coding along with a strong interest in leading a team.

● Knowledge of tech stack, which in our case is Node.js/GraphQL/TypeScript for API

development, PostgreSQL, AWS, Python for data processing.

● Proven technical experience of 4-10 years of work-ex coupled with a strategic growth mindset

Responsibilities

● Lead the software design, architecture, development, debugging, documentation, testing,

deployment, maintenance and improvement efforts

Establish the roadmap and architecture based on the latest proven technologies and Hora’s

needs

● Manage, lead and mentor other engineers and demonstrate best engineering practices with the

team

●

Lead the team to follow our software development process including writing unit tests,

performing code reviews, doing daily standups, setting OKRs and milestones, etc.

●

Excellent experience in coding including the ability to write well-crafted, well-tested, readable,

maintainable code

● Develop backend code for mobile applications and internal web tools

● Develop APIs for the mobile platform

● Own, innovate and maintain the backend infrastructure

● Code using cutting-edge tools in close collaboration with our Machine Learning team

● Stay on top of state-of-the-art technologies and apply them

● Collaborate with teams and share knowledge via tech talks and promote tech and engineering

best practices within the team

Minimum Qualifications

● B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a related technical field or equivalent

practical experience

● 4-10 years of relevant work experience in system design, algorithms, data structures, scalability,

DevOps, security and testing

● Demonstrated experience in delivering reliable, scalable, performant, and secure web-based

systems and services in production

● Experience working with three or more from the following: web application development,

Unix/Linux environments, mobile application development, distributed and parallel systems,

machine learning, natural language processing, networking, developing large software systems,

security for software development.

● Strong experience in system design, scalability, DevOps, security and testing

● Strong and proven passion for code quality

● Knowledge of a wide-range of front and back-end technologies.



Experience with any of the following technologies is particularly desirable: TypeScript,

GraphQL, node.js, Python, Go, Java, HTML/CSS, React, Redis, PostgreSQL, Kafka,

Spark, ElasticSearch, Docker/Kubernetes, AWS, Git. ○

Experience in writing backend code with modern languages and frameworks

(JavaScript/node.js or Python/Django)

● Strong relational database experience (PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.)

● Experience in API development for mobile/web

● Strong Computer Science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, memory management,

concurrency

Preferred Qualifications (Added advantage)

● Excellent written communication, verbal communication, and presentation skills

● Competitive programming experience

● Familiarity with data science and/or machine learning, experience in credit and risk models,

NLP and network analysis expertise

● Experience of working on fintech products

● Experience in managing a distributed set of engineers/developers
