Core AI Backend Engineer – LLM Fine-Tuning
You know that moment when you don’t just debug code — you train a model, fine-tune it, and suddenly it understands your domain better than you expected? That’s the kind of magic we’re looking for.
We’re building something that turns chaotic social video data into crystal-clear business intelligence. Not just another API — but AI-backed architecture fine-tuned to our world. Systems that marketing teams thank you for, because they feel the intelligence, not just the infrastructure.
Either you feel the craft when you read this, or you don’t. This isn’t just another backend role. This is where you bring together scalable systems and cutting-edge LLMs to build something the world hasn’t seen before.
Who We Are
We’re a small, global team that ships fast. Every line of code and every model choice affects millions of video analysis requests.
Our engineers don’t just build APIs — they architect solutions, they optimize at scale, and now, they fine-tune models to make AI work in the real world. Our CPTO still codes. Our senior engineers make complexity look effortless. Our backend team sets a standard that others ask how we move so fast.
What We Need
We need someone who’s lived both sides of this life:
- Backend excellence: building high-scale, high-performance systems.
- LLM fine-tuning: hands-on with open-source models, not just calling APIs.
Someone who can sit with a requirement at 2pm and by 6pm not only has endpoints working, but also has a fine-tuned model running behind them — customized to our use case.
Your Craft
- JavaScript/TypeScript & NodeJS as core backend tools.
- Next.js for full-stack where needed.
- Rust when performance is non-negotiable.
- Golang/Python as comfortable tools of choice.
- MySQL/Postgres/Redis — wielded with intention.
- AWS ecosystem — your playground, not your puzzle.
- LLM/AI integration you’ve actually shipped.
- Open-source LLM fine-tuning experience:
- Bringing in open-source models (LLaMA, Mistral, Falcon, etc.).
- Fine-tuning/adapting them for specific domains.
- Optimizing for inference cost, latency, and accuracy.
The Reality
The work is beautifully complex. The scale is real and growing. The problems are the kind that wake you up at 3am with solutions.
If you get your energy from building backend systems and adapting LLMs to make them smarter for real-world use, you’ll probably fall in love with what we do. If you’re only interested in APIs without touching models, this won’t be your thing — and that’s completely okay.
How to Apply
If you’re reading this thinking “finally, a team that actually cares about real AI engineering” — we’d love to see something you’ve built.
Not just a resume. Show us your craft:
- An LLM fine-tuning repo.
- A domain-adapted model you worked on.
- A system design where you combined backend and AI.
- Or even a short write-up or voice note explaining what you’ve fine-tuned.
We’re genuinely excited to see what you’ve done and have a meaningful conversation about whether this could be magic for both of us.
Good to Have Skills:
- 3+ years of experience in using Java/J2EE tech stacks
- Good understanding of data structures and algorithms.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast paced internet start-up environment.
- Experience in technical mentorship/coaching is highly desirable.
- Understanding of AI/ML algorithms is a plus.
Role & Responsibilities
- Design Automation framework and develop automated test scripts to maximize efficiency
- Integration of automation suites with tools such as browser stack
Writing and executing automated tests for new features - Mentoring the juniors and contributing to peer reviews
- Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on features and usability as accurately as possible and come up with possible test requirements
- Identify test data requirements and generate required data to support testing
- Completion of the tasks without creating a dependency
- 6 years of experience writing automated tests and frameworks from scratch for automating Mobile App using tools such as XCUITest, Appium, UIAutomator etc. Good exposure in Mobile App Automation testing using any framework
- Experience working on scripting or programming languages (Java, Python) Hands-on experience with TestNG frameworks
- Familiar with agile software development cycles and security testing
- Strong technical and analytical skills; ability to understand complex systems and design tests around integration and interface points
- Knowledge of general QA procedures and methodologies, as well as software development fundamentals. Familiarity with tools like postman, Burp suite and mobile app development tools.
- A practiced eye for pixel misalignments, margin errors, and other visual details.

About the Tech
Technology and our people is what makes Tide possible. We work in autonomous teams where backend, iOS, Android, web, QA, DevOps, agile coaches, data experts and product owners solve difficult problems together to get the job done. We self-organise and discuss technical challenges and set our own guidelines in the different Community of Practices.
On the backend we see Java 8 as legacy and use Java 11+ for our micro-services. We provide RESTful APIs to our colleagues in the frontend, but also use gRPC for internal service-to-service communications. Spring Boot is our work horse, but we are open to new experiments. We are cloud-native and run everything on AWS. You’ll see containers (Docker), queues (SNS+SQS) and events everywhere. The nature of our business naturally fits with relational databases, but we have also found some use cases for NoSQL.
Our frontends have done an incredible job at consuming our APIs and providing the best UX to our members. They are fully native Android and iOS apps or Angular 2+ web apps. DevOps provides vital infrastructure and operations support.
About You
We’re an international scale up, we’re busy! If fast paced environments, cross team exposure, inquisitive freedom and the ability to have a real impact on a rapidly growing scale up appeals to you, then you already have the mind of a Tidean. If you have that along with the following experience, we’d love to hear from you.
The non-negotiables:
- Good commercial experience building server-side applications and detailed knowledge of the relevant programming languages for your stack (i.e Java 8 or newer).
- Sound knowledge of a Java backend framework (e.g. Spring/Spring Boot).
- Exposure to microservices and implementing and consuming RESTful APIs.
- A mindset of delivering secure, well-tested and well-documented software.
- Experience with relational databases.
The highly desirables:
- Exposure to continuous integration, delivery and deployment.
- Some experience integrating to third parties.
- Comfortable working in agile methodologies, ideally Scrum.
- Exposure to common development tools such as IntelliJ, Git, Jira, etc.
