Cassandra Administrator

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Cassandra Administrator with strong expertise in Apache Cassandra and DataStax Enterprise (DSE) environments. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience in database administration, performance tuning, high availability, and migration activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain DSE Cassandra database clusters.
• Monitor database performance and optimize for scalability and availability.
• Set up and manage replication, backup, and recovery processes.
• Perform DSE Cassandra migration from RHEL to AWS Amazon Linux 2023.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database performance issues and outages.
• Collaborate with Development and DevOps teams to provide database support.
• Develop and maintain automation scripts using Shell, Python, or Ansible.
• Create and maintain technical documentation.
• Implement disaster recovery and high-availability solutions.
• Assist in designing highly scalable and fault-tolerant systems.

Required Skills

• 4+ years of experience in NoSQL database administration.
• Strong hands-on experience with Apache Cassandra / DataStax Enterprise (DSE).
• Good understanding of Cassandra architecture, consistency levels, partitioning, compaction, gossip protocol, and snitches.
• Experience with Nodetool, CQLSH, and DataStax OpsCenter.
• Proficiency in Cassandra Query Language (CQL).
• Hands-on experience in performance tuning and troubleshooting.
• Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix environments.
• Experience with Shell scripting or Python.
• Familiarity with AWS and monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK Stack.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Ansible.
• Exposure to high availability and disaster recovery solutions.

Notice Period: Immediate to 30 days preferred.

• Experience using AWS (that’s just common sense)
• Experience designing and building web environments on AWS, which includes working with services like EC2, ELB, RDS, and S3
• Experience building and maintaining cloud-native applications
• A solid background in Linux/Unix and Windows server system administration

• An understanding of writing Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), using tools like CloudFormation or Terraform
• Knowledge of one or more of the most-used programming languages available for today’s cloud computing (i.e., SQL data, XML data, R math, Clojure math, Haskell functional, Erlang functional, Python procedural, and Go procedural languages)
• Experience in troubleshooting distributed systems
• Proficiency in script development and scripting languages
• The ability to be a team player
• The ability and skill to train other people in procedural and technical topics
• Strong communication and collaboration skills

As a special aside, an AWS engineer who works in DevOps should also have experience with:

• The theory, concepts, and real-world application of Continuous Delivery (CD), which requires familiarity with tools like AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodeDeploy, and AWS CodePipeline
• An understanding of automation

Required Skills:

• Experience in systems administration, SRE or DevOps focused role
• Experience in handling production support (on-call)
• Good understanding of the Linux operating system and networking concepts.
• Demonstrated competency with the following AWS services: ECS, EC2, EBS, EKS, S3, RDS, ELB, IAM, Lambda.
• Experience with Docker containers and containerization concepts
• Experience with managing and scaling Kubernetes clusters in a production environment
• Experience building scalable infrastructure in AWS with Terraform.
• Strong knowledge of Protocol-level such as HTTP/HTTPS, SMTP, DNS, and LDAP
• Experience monitoring production systems
• Expertise in leveraging Automation / DevOps principles, experience with operational tools, and able to apply best practices for infrastructure and software deployment (Ansible).
• HAProxy, Nginx, SSH, MySQL configuration and operation experience
• Ability to work seamlessly with software developers, QA, project managers, and business development
• Ability to produce and maintain written documentation
