Embedded Software Engineer

Job Summary:

We are looking for a motivated Embedded Engineer to design, develop, and test application-level firmware for IoT and electronic products. The role focuses on developing embedded applications, integrating with communication stacks, and ensuring reliable operation of hardware and field devices.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with microcontrollers, RTOS, and C/C++ programming, along with a good understanding of communication protocols and embedded hardware interfaces.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Application Development

• Design and develop embedded application software for IoT or electronic products.
• Implement device logic, data handling, and communication interfaces as per system requirements.
• Integrate with underlying firmware layers such as communication stacks and hardware drivers.
• Develop and maintain modular, reusable, and efficient code following coding standards.

2. Integration & Testing

• Integrate and validate software with hardware boards and peripheral components.
• Perform unit, integration, and system-level testing for embedded applications.
• Debug issues using JTAG, serial console, and logic analyzers.
• Support board bring-up and field testing activities.

3. Optimization & Debugging

• Optimize firmware for performance, reliability, and low power consumption.
• Analyze logs and troubleshoot issues in coordination with hardware and QA teams.
• Implement diagnostic and monitoring features for runtime fault detection.

4. Documentation & Quality

• Maintain code documentation, configuration details, and release notes.
• Ensure compliance with firmware design standards and development processes.
• Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Communication, or Computer Engineering.
• 2–5 years of hands-on experience in embedded firmware / application development.
• Strong programming skills in C / C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with 8-bit / 32-bit microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M, MSP430, STM32, etc.).
• Good understanding of RTOS concepts, multitasking, and inter-process communication.
• Familiarity with hardware interfaces: UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, ADC, timers.
• Working knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git).
• Strong debugging and analytical skills.

Preferred Attributes:

• Experience in IoT or Smart Metering products.
• Exposure to communication protocols such as DLMS/COSEM, Modbus, MQTT, CoAP, or Wi-SUN.
• Knowledge of low-power system design and firmware update mechanisms (OTA).
• Experience with Python scripting for test automation.
• Familiarity with hardware bring-up and embedded testing tools.

Roles and Responsibilities

As an Embedded Firmware Engineer, you will be responsible for:

● Leading the firmware development for our product line of safety and medical devices.

● Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining embedded firmware.

● Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define software requirements, specifications, and architectures based on product requirements and industry standards.

● Implementing firmware solutions that comply with ATEX certification, IEC 61508, and Functional Safety (SIL standards) for devices used in hazardous locations.

● Conducting thorough testing and validation of firmware to ensure reliability, accuracy, and compliance with safety standards.

● Optimizing firmware for power efficiency and performance to meet the life of portable and battery-powered devices.

● Implement firmware algorithms for sensor calibration, data processing, and user interface interactions.

● Assisting in hardware-software integration, debugging, and troubleshooting to ensure seamless functionality of the devices.

● Collaborating with Quality Assurance and Product Validation teams to ensure the highest quality of firmware deliverables.

● Participating in code reviews and providing constructive feedback to improve code quality and maintainability.

● Keeping abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and advancements in embedded systems for continuous improvement and innovation.

Skills and Qualifications:

● Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.

● 3+ years of experience in embedded firmware development for portable and wireless gas detectors and docking stations.

● Proficiency in C/C++ programming languages for embedded systems.

● Hands-on experience with a complete product development cycle is an add-on.

● Experience with STM32/STM8/ MSP430 or any other low-power microcontrollers for the development of low-powered devices.

● Experience in reading and optimizing analog data in various types of ADCs.

● Understanding of ATEX certification requirements and compliance.

● Understanding and practical experience with Functional Safety standards (SIL2/3 standards) in the development of safety-critical systems is an add-on.

● Experience with coding standards. (eg: Misra-C) Familiarity with System architectures and communication protocols like I2C, UART, SPI, etc. Knowledge of sleep modes and low-power optimization techniques for battery-operated devices.

● Experience in developing and using custom segment LCDs (TN, STN, etc.) used in battery-powered ultra-low power devices.

● Experience with software development tools, version control systems, and bug-tracking systems. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Requirements

Core skills:

• Own & lead full cycle development: design, implementation, testing & debugging for an automotive product.
• Create conceptual system designs, assess risks, conduct design trade studies, and develop a product that meets feature requirements for integrating sensor, processing and software systems. 
• Lead innovative system development projects with responsibility for achievement of cost, schedule, and technical requirements, with an eye toward technology maturation, transition, and follow on work. 
• Generate comprehensive engineering documentation.
• Responsible for end-to-end system firmware development to include power management, boot loaders, scheduling, RTOS and /or bare metal implementations.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex software problems in embedded real-time systems.
• Source code development, review & maintenance (C/C++).
• Dive into & take ownership of critical design issues.
• Analyse & propose solutions for performance bottlenecks.
• Address all aspects of technology readiness, including manufacturability. 
• Help build robust methodology and processes to deliver the technology to products. 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE 

• Experience in embedded architecture, external interfaces, product constraints, along with ability to develop architectures / features that meet these constraints while providing new value for the platform. 
• Experience in system architecture, operating system, device architecture, hardware design.
• Strong background in software methodology & full cycle development (Design, implementation, testing & debugging).
