Devops Engineer

Position Overview: We are seeking a talented and experienced Cloud Engineer specialized in AWS cloud services to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in AWS infrastructure and services, including EC2, Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Auto Scaling, S3, VPC, RDS, CloudFormation, CloudFront, Route 53, AWS Certificate Manager (ACM), and Terraform for Infrastructure as Code (IaC). Experience with other AWS services is a plus.

Responsibilities:

• Design, deploy, and maintain AWS infrastructure solutions, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.

• Configure and manage EC2 instances to meet application requirements.

• Implement and manage Elastic Load Balancers (ELB) to distribute incoming traffic across multiple instances.

• Set up and manage AWS Auto Scaling to dynamically adjust resources based on demand.

• Configure and maintain VPCs, including subnets, route tables, and security groups, to control network traffic.

• Deploy and manage AWS CloudFormation and Terraform templates to automate infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.

• Implement and monitor S3 storage solutions for secure and scalable data storage

• Set up and manage CloudFront distributions for content delivery with low latency and high transfer speeds.

• Configure Route 53 for domain management, DNS routing, and failover configurations.

• Manage AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) for provisioning, managing, and deploying SSL/TLS certificates.

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and provide effective cloud solutions.

• Stay updated with the latest AWS technologies and best practices to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in designing, deploying, and managing AWS cloud solutions.

• Strong proficiency in AWS services such as EC2, ELB, Auto Scaling, VPC, S3, RDS, and CloudFormation.

• Experience with other AWS services such as Lambda, ECS, EKS, and DynamoDB is a plus.

• Solid understanding of cloud computing principles, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.

• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues in a cloud environment.

• Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

• Relevant AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, etc.) are highly desirable.

At Toast, our Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) are responsible for keeping all customer-facing services and other Toast production systems running smoothly. SREs are a blend of pragmatic operators and software craftspeople who apply sound software engineering principles, operational discipline, and mature automation to our environments and our codebase. Our decisions are based on instrumentation and continuous observability, as well as predictions and capacity planning.

About this roll* (Responsibilities) 

• Gather and analyze metrics from both operating systems and applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding
• Partner with development teams to improve services through rigorous testing and release procedures
• Participate in system design consulting, platform management, and capacity planning
• Create sustainable systems and services through automation and uplift
• Balance feature development speed and reliability with well-defined service level objectives

Troubleshooting and Supporting Escalations:

• Gather and analyze metrics from both operating systems and applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding
• Diagnose performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations across infrastructure, databases, web, and mobile applications
• Implement strategies to increase system reliability and performance through on-call rotation and process optimization
• Perform and run blameless RCAs on incidents and outages aggressively, looking for answers that will prevent the incident from ever happening again

Do you have the right ingredients? (Requirements)

• Extensive industry experience with at least 7+ years in SRE and/or DevOps roles
• Polyglot technologist/generalist with a thirst for learning
• Deep understanding of cloud and microservice architecture and the JVM
• Experience with tools such as APM, Terraform, Ansible, GitHub, Jenkins, and Docker
• Experience developing software or software projects in at least four languages, ideally including two of Go, Python, and Java
• Experience with cloud computing technologies ( AWS cloud provider preferred)

• A background in software development, with experience of working in an agile product software development environment
• An understanding of modern deployment tools (Git, Bitbucket, Jenkins, etc.), workflow tools (Jira, Confluence) and practices (Agile (SCRUM), DevOps, etc.)
• Expert level experience with AWS tools, technologies and APIs associated with it - IAM, Cloud-Formation, Cloud Watch, AMIs, SNS, EC2, EBS, EFS, S3, RDS, VPC, ELB, IAM, Route 53, Security Groups, Lambda, VPC etc.
• Hands on experience with Kubernetes (EKS preferred)
• Strong DevOps skills across CI/CD and configuration management using Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform, Docker.
• Experience provisioning and spinning up AWS Clusters using Terraform, Helm, Helm Charts
• Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to manage and work with teams and customers across the globe

As DevOps Engineer, you are responsible to setup and maintain GIT repository, DevOps tools like Jenkins, UCD, Docker, Kubernetes, Jfrog Artifactory, Cloud monitoring tools, Cloud security.

• Setup, configure, and maintain GIT repos, Jenkins, UCD, etc. for multi hosting cloud environments.
• Architect and maintain the server infrastructure in AWS. Build highly resilient infrastructure following industry best practices.
• Working on Docker images and maintaining Kubernetes clusters.
• Develop and maintain the automation scripts using Ansible or other available tools.
• Maintain and monitor cloud Kubernetes Clusters and patching when necessary.
• Working on Cloud security tools to keep applications secured.
• Participate in software development lifecycle, specifically infra design, execution, and debugging required to achieve successful implementation of integrated solutions within the portfolio.

• Minimum 4-6 years of experience in IT industry.
• Expertise in implementing and managing Devops CI/CD pipeline.

• Working knowledge of scripting using shell, Python, Terraform, Ansible or puppet or chef.
• Experience and good understanding in any of Cloud like AWS, Azure, Google cloud.
• Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes is required.
• Proficient in troubleshooting skills with proven abilities in resolving complex technical issues.
• Experience with working with ticketing tools.
• Middleware technologies knowledge or database knowledge is desirable.
• Experience and well versed with Jira tool is a plus.

• You have experience of 2-4 years in building high-performance consumer-facing mobile applications at Product companies of a decent scale.
• You can write code preferably in Golang and Python.
• You have experience with debugging production issues and writing RCAs.
• You have demonstrable stories of being on-call and how outages have been handled.
• You have experience developing products on Kubernetes and cloud providers like GCP and AWS.
• You have worked with Cloud Native (CNCF) technologies.
• You have experience automating CI/CD pipelines.
