Position Overview

As the Lead Software Engineer in our Research & Innovation team, you’ll play a strategic role in establishing and driving the technical vision for industrial AI solutions. Working closely with the Lead AI Engineer, you will form a leadership tandem to define the roadmap for the team, cultivate an innovative culture, and ensure that projects are strategically aligned with the organization’s goals. Your leadership will be crucial in developing, mentoring, and empowering the team as we expand, helping create an environment where innovative ideas can translate seamlessly from research to industry-ready products.

Key Responsibilities:

• Define and drive the technical strategy for embedding AI into industrial automation products, with a focus on scalability, quality, and industry compliance.
• Lead the development of a collaborative, high-performing engineering team, mentoring junior engineers, automation experts, and researchers.
• Establish and oversee processes and standards for agile and DevOps practices, ensuring project alignment with strategic goals.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to align project goals, define priorities, and manage timelines, while driving innovative, research-based solutions.
• Act as a key decision-maker on technical issues, architecture, and system design, ensuring long-term maintainability and scalability of solutions.
• Ensure adherence to industry standards, certifications, and compliance, and advocate for industry best practices within the team.
• Stay updated on software engineering trends and AI applications in embedded systems, incorporating the latest advancements into the team’s strategic planning.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Extensive experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of leading technical teams, ideally in manufacturing or embedded systems.
• Strong expertise in Python and C++/Rust, Gitlab toolchains, and system architecture for embedded applications.
• Experience in DevOps, CI/CD, and agile methodologies, with an emphasis on setting and maintaining high standards across a team.
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills in English.
• Willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred:

• Background in driving team culture, agile project management, and experience embedding AI in industrial products.
• Familiarity with sociocratic or consent-based management practices.
• Knowledge in embedded programming is an advantage.

Roles and Responsibilities

As an Embedded Firmware Engineer, you will be responsible for:

● Leading the firmware development for our product line of safety and medical devices.

● Designing, developing, testing, and maintaining embedded firmware.

● Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define software requirements, specifications, and architectures based on product requirements and industry standards.

● Implementing firmware solutions that comply with ATEX certification, IEC 61508, and Functional Safety (SIL standards) for devices used in hazardous locations.

● Conducting thorough testing and validation of firmware to ensure reliability, accuracy, and compliance with safety standards.

● Optimizing firmware for power efficiency and performance to meet the life of portable and battery-powered devices.

● Implement firmware algorithms for sensor calibration, data processing, and user interface interactions.

● Assisting in hardware-software integration, debugging, and troubleshooting to ensure seamless functionality of the devices.

● Collaborating with Quality Assurance and Product Validation teams to ensure the highest quality of firmware deliverables.

● Participating in code reviews and providing constructive feedback to improve code quality and maintainability.

● Keeping abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and advancements in embedded systems for continuous improvement and innovation.

Skills and Qualifications:

● Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.

● 3+ years of experience in embedded firmware development for portable and wireless gas detectors and docking stations.

● Proficiency in C/C++ programming languages for embedded systems.

● Hands-on experience with a complete product development cycle is an add-on.

● Experience with STM32/STM8/ MSP430 or any other low-power microcontrollers for the development of low-powered devices.

● Experience in reading and optimizing analog data in various types of ADCs.

● Understanding of ATEX certification requirements and compliance.

● Understanding and practical experience with Functional Safety standards (SIL2/3 standards) in the development of safety-critical systems is an add-on.

● Experience with coding standards. (eg: Misra-C) Familiarity with System architectures and communication protocols like I2C, UART, SPI, etc. Knowledge of sleep modes and low-power optimization techniques for battery-operated devices.

● Experience in developing and using custom segment LCDs (TN, STN, etc.) used in battery-powered ultra-low power devices.

● Experience with software development tools, version control systems, and bug-tracking systems. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

About the position 

We are looking for a multiple embedded software engineers with experience in developing firmware for controlling power electronics systems. Openings are available for senior and principal engineer positions across multiple product streams, and target markets include the Indian subcontinent, Africa and North America. 

Required Technical skills 

• Demonstrated experience in developing embedded firmware for real-time power electronics systems using 16/32 bit ARM microcontrollers (ST Microelectronics preferred).  
• Must have shipped at least 1 major relevant product to the market which meets standard industry specifications. Experience with designing for North American/European markets a plus. 
• Experience with common communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, USB, UART, Bluetooth, Ethernet, RS232, and RS485 
• Experience with peripherals and systems such as ADC, DAC, timer, GPIO, PWM, DMA, NVIC, serial and parallel interfaces, memory, bootloaders and watchdog timers 
• Proficiency in advanced algorithm development using Embedded C 
• Experience with embedded software tools such as editors, assemblers, compilers, debuggers, simulators, emulators and Flash/OTP programmers. 
• Thorough understanding of power electronics topologies and control strategies 
• Good grasp over digital signal processing techniques 
• Ability to read and interpret component datasheets, PCB schematics and layout design

Qualifications 

• Junior Engineer: A Master's (preferred) in Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering with 1 year of industrial experience, or a Bachelor's with 3 years of relevant industrial experience. 
• Senior Engineer: A Master's (preferred) in Electrical/Electronics/Computer Engineering with 4 years of industrial experience, or a Bachelor's with 6 years of relevant industrial experience. 
• Principal Engineer: A Master's (preferred) in Electrical /Electronics/Computer Engineering with 8 years of industrial experience, or a Bachelor's with 10 years of relevant industrial experience. 

Responsibilities 

• Develop, implement and test cutting-edge algorithms for medium and high-power AC-DC, DC-AC and AC-AC conversion of 1 phase and 3 phase AC systems up to 440 V AC, and DC-DC conversion of systems up to 1000 V DC. 
• Develop sensing and IoT solutions for power electronics embedded systems 
• Convert product requirements into technical specifications for Indian and international markets 
• Cover all stages (pertaining to firmware) of V model for product development 
• Generate technical documentation describing product functioning and test procedures for hand-off to SQA 
• Debug product failures in the field using data-driven analysis techniques

What you’ll do at Ather:

A successful candidate is expected to lead the Firmware development and integration effort for various Ather products and be responsible for qualifying and integrating FW at various stages with HW. Responsibilities include:

• Understanding requirements from different stakeholders and translating these to application features

• Writing high quality source code to program complete applications within deadlines

• Unit-testing code for robustness, including edge cases, usability, and general reliability

• Performing functional and non-functional testing

• Troubleshooting and debugging applications

• Designing creative prototypes according to specifications

• Evaluating existing applications to reprogram, update and add new features

• Developing technical documents and handbooks to accurately represent application design and code
