Software Engineer (Backend / Distributed Systems)

This role is for a hands-on Backend Software Engineer with 5+ years of experience building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems. The candidate will be responsible for developing scalable backend services, optimizing system performance, improving reliability, and contributing to architecture decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs.
• Build scalable and reliable distributed systems.
• Collaborate with global engineering teams (US & India).
• Participate in system design, code reviews, testing, and CI/CD processes.
• Monitor production systems and provide support through on-call rotations.
• Improve system performance, fault tolerance, observability, and resiliency.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decision-making.

Mandatory Skills

• 5+ years of software development experience.
• Strong coding skills in Java or Python.
• Experience with Distributed Systems and Microservices Architecture.
• Hands-on experience with REST APIs and API-driven applications.
• Strong knowledge of MySQL or PostgreSQL.
• Experience with CI/CD, testing, and code quality practices.

Preferred Skills

• Spring Boot (for Java developers).
• Kafka, Kinesis, or other event-driven/streaming technologies.

• Degree in Computer Science (BS/MS), related technical field or equivalent practical experience
• 8+ years of industry experience in product development
• Experience in coaching and mentoring team members
• Must own a specific component of the product. Gathering requirements by working with product management. Working closely with development managers in defining external product interfaces
• Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must articulate various design approaches and design decisions clearly - within the team and across the teams.
• Must work with QA engineers to devise proper test constructs - unit testing and integration tests.

• Leads more than one projects end-to-end and collaborates across functions. Drives planning, estimation and execution.
• Manages stakeholder expectations and offers scalable, reliable, performant and easy to maintain solutions
• Consistently delivers complex, well backed and bug-free products in time
• Consistently takes well thought technical/design decisions
• Develops expertise in more than one area and shares knowledge with others. able to mentor/train in areas which are new to them.

This is fully a remote role, but the employer needs to fly down to the office in Kolkata for 5–6 days every month. Plane tickets and accommodation will be reimbursed by the company.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Excellent problem-solving & analytical skills & OO principles
• Solid understanding of the data structure & algorithms.
• Expert knowledge with any one of the Javascript Framework such as Node Js.
• Any additional experience with Java or python, GoLang would be nice to have.
• Experience working with SQL database like MySQL or PostgreSQL
• Experience working with NoSQL databases like mongoDB, couchbase would be nice to have
• Working experience with cache like redis, mem cached or elasticache would be nice to have
• Working experience with Message Queues would be a great advantage.

• Ability to do in depth analysis or problem statement or use case & Build robust & scalable architecture
• Logging & monitoring of the production system in real time
• Lead a team of 2-4 team members & make sure team practices defined coding practices across the project. 

Responsibilities:

• Build scalable, service oriented web applications from scratch for technology products for European market.
• Maintain these applications for accuracy and high availability.
• Continuously identify opportunities to improve system designs, architecture and implementation standards
• Participate with founding, business and product teams in discussions on how to build and launch new modules.
• Collaborate across functions and own the planning, estimation and execution for parts of the product.
• Start as an individual contributor but stay ready to build and mentor a small team of up to 5 engineers over the coming months and years.
• Contribute in hiring highly ambitious engineers as the team grows.
• Being among the first people on the engineering team, be a culture driver.

Requirements:

• Experience of architecting and building products/business critical backend applications using different MVC frameworks.
• Experience with microservices.
• Experience of building and maintaining scalable applications using Node.js/MEAN stack.
• Experience of deploying and maintaining web applications.
• Experience with non relational databases like MongoDB.
• Understanding of relational databases like MySQL.
• Familiarity with REST APIs and stress testing tools.
• Good communication skills.

• Exposure in building polyglot applications.
• Exposure for devops and related processes, preferably GCP.
• Knowledge of components in scalable solutions i. e. database partitions, message brokers, background processing.
• Exposure to basic frontend technologies to speed up collaboration with the frontend team.

Must Haves

• Programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
• 1+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and current systems.
• 4+ years’  work experience in  software development
• BS degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering or related field
• Understanding of operating system fundamentals (Linux)
• Understanding of scalable computing systems, software architecture, data structures, and algorithms
• Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong analytical skills, with excellent problem solving abilities
• Working experience with Kubernetes
• Experienced working with distributed databases at scale

• Experience in developing software using AWS native services & technologies.
• Experience taking a lead role in building and operating scalable distributed systems
