Job Title: Principal Backend Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for a Principal Backend Engineer to architect, scale, and lead the development of robust backend systems. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll drive technical decisions, mentor engineers, collaborate closely with clients and product teams, and help modernize platforms using scalable architectures and emerging technologies, including AI/ML where relevant.

• Backend: PHP (Laravel / CodeIgniter), Node.js
• Databases: MySQL, MongoDB
• Architecture: Microservices / Modular Monolith
• Cloud (Good to Have): AWS / GCP

Key Responsibilities

Backend Architecture & Development

• Own and evolve backend architecture across PHP and Node.js services
• Design and review scalable, maintainable systems (microservices or modular monoliths)
• Manage and optimize integrations across MySQL and MongoDB (data modeling, indexing, performance tuning)

Technical Leadership

• Lead system design discussions, architecture reviews, and code quality initiatives
• Establish backend development standards, best practices, and documentation
• Mentor mid and senior engineers on design patterns, testing strategies, and CI/CD pipelines
• Drive decisions around refactoring legacy systems and platform modernization

Client & Stakeholder Communication

• Act as the technical SPOC for backend architecture and integrations
• Translate business and product requirements into technical solutions
• Explain trade-offs, constraints, and backend workflows to non-technical stakeholders
• Present PoCs and technical approaches confidently to clients

AI & ML Integration (Strategic / Optional)

• Identify backend use cases for AI such as personalization, recommendations, fraud detection, or data enrichment
• Design backend APIs, services, or cron jobs that interact with AI/ML models
• Collaborate with data teams and stay updated on AI tools/APIs (e.g., OpenAI, LangChain)

Scalability, Security & Performance

• Ensure API security, role-based access control, and rate limiting
• Optimize system performance using caching, queues, and query optimization
• Plan and support horizontal/vertical scaling on cloud infrastructure

• Strong expertise in database design (MySQL & MongoDB)

Required Skills:

· Experience in implementing Object-Oriented Python, Django.

· Good understanding on Django ORM.

· Experienced in interfacing with *third party API’s using REST

· Worked with varieties of Relational Databases (RDBMS) like SQLite, MySQL, PostgreSQL.

· Experience in Version Control with Git and Bitbucket.

· Experience with JIRA the development progress and tracking deadlines of the project

Our client is a rapid growth stage Edtech start-up focused on solving the teacher shortage crisis in the US education system using technology by bringing teachers to the classrooms and giving them access to the right tools to teach students in a highly engaging manner.

They have a development center in Mumbai and they are looking to scale up the teams in Pune and Bangalore as well.

What does the role entail:

● Lead User Stories and guide senior/software engineers in the development process

● Understand architecture principles, design patterns and implement them from architectural artifacts.

● Provide effort estimation of assigned work and be able to complete as per the estimations and timelines

● Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code including unit tests and integration tests to ensure software quality

● Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze requirements, design solutions, and implement new features

● Participate in design and code reviews

● Ability to resolve performance issues

● Mentor junior software engineers and help them grow their technical skills

Must Have Skills:

● B.E/B.Tech in computer science

● 8-11 years of experience

● Hands-on experience following skills

MS Technologies: NET CORE 5+, C#

Backend : MSSQL /MySQL/Postgres 

● Good understanding of Cloud technologies like Azure/AWS.

● Good understanding of Design Principles, Design patterns and Microservices Architecture.

● Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills

● Worked in an Agile software development environment

Must understand full stack development frameworks including knowledge of building scalable APIs, interfaces, software components, schema design, availability, and latency preferably in a cloud environment.

● Worked in a fast-paced environment preferably in a tech driven startup

● Understanding of different types of architectures.

Job Requirements:       

·        Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Computer Science or Engineering.

·        Minimum 5 years of experience working as a senior–level Software Engineer

·        Excellent programming and debugging skills in RoR and Python

·        Experience in web development and automation

·        Experience developing on Windows and Linux systems 

Although not required, the following are a plus: 

·        Experience working with Build scripts, Shell scripts, Makefiles

·        Experience with Jenkins and other CI/CD tools

·        Knowledge of RESTful web services and docker

• 4+ years of experience with Node.js
• Expertise in Typescript, AWS, Firebase, MongoDB, and Express

You will be bringing:

• Hands-on experience in writing applications using Node.js (including Socket.io and Express or similar)
• Excellent knowledge of a few of the available databases such as MySQL, MongoDB, etc.
• Proficiency in application deployment on Linux or Ubuntu environments
• Proficiency in JavaScript languages like React and/or Angular, along with a comprehensive experience in open-source frameworks
• Experience in server-client architecture project(s)
• Ability to prioritize in a chaotic and ambiguous environment
• An open, growth mindset when giving and receiving feedback
