Senior Software Engineer (Backend)

Role Overview

Software Architect – Healthcare Interoperability is responsible for leading the design and development of a nextgeneration healthcare interface engine. This role involves integrating with various EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, Athena, and Meditech, managing diverse data formats including HL7 v2, FHIR R4, X12/EDI, JSON, and XML, while ensuring the platform is scalable, compliant, and observable.

Responsibilities

• Design the architecture for a custom interface engine supporting HL7 v2, FHIR (R4), and X12 EDI etc transactions.
• Define routing, transformation, and queuing strategies for high-volume healthcare data exchange.
• Integration with EHRs (Epic, Athena, Cerner, Meditech) and clearinghouses.
• Establish error handling, retries, monitoring, and resilience patterns (Resilience4j, circuit breakers, observability).
• Mentor developers, review designs/code, and enforce best practices.

Technical Skills Required

• Java / Spring Boot (microservices, APIs, event-driven patterns)
• Integration frameworks: Apache Camel or Spring Integration
• Data mapping: Smooks, HAPI FHIR
• Message formats: HL7 v2, FHIR (STU3/R4), X12 EDI (837, 835, 270/271), JSON, XML, CSV etc

Architecture & Infrastructure:

• Cloud-native design (Azure / AWS)
• Kafka / RabbitMQ for messaging
• Observability: Grafana / Prometheus / ELK
• Security: OAuth2, JWT, mutual TLS, encryption at rest/in-transit

Domain Knowledge:

• Healthcare RCM (pre-billing edits, eligibility, claims, remittance)
• EHR APIs ( Epic App Orchard, Athena One, Cerner Ignite etc)

Experience

• 10+ years in software engineering with 3+ years in healthcare interoperability.

• Develop, test, and maintain server-side applications using Node.js and related technologies.
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices architecture to support frontend functionality.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
• Optimize application performance, ensuring scalability and reliability.
• Conduct code reviews, mentor junior developers, and ensure adherence to best practices.
• Stay updated with emerging backend technologies and methodologies to improve development processes.

Mandatory

• SaaS experience of 2 years with total development experience of 4 years
• Must have worked in a smaller company of less than 100
• Should have built solutions/softwares end to end and not just as a part of bigger team
• Should see themselves going deeper into the same role even 5 years down the line
• Should have knowledge on Node.js, MongoDB, and AWS
• Strong understanding of asynchronous programming, event-driven architecture, and Node.js design patterns.
• Proficiency in working with databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or MySQL.
• Experience with API development, including RESTful services and microservices.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to debug complex server-side issues.

Essential

• Proficiency with version control systems like Git.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
• Knowledge of system design and scalable architecture.
• Understanding of security best practices and implementing secure APIs.

Good to Have

• Experience with GraphQL and related backend technologies.
• Knowledge of containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with message brokers like RabbitMQ or Kafka.
• Experience with platforms like Shopify, BigCommerce, or other e-commerce technologies.
• Exposure to frontend technologies such as React for better cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

• Rewrite existing APIs in NodeJS.
• Remodel the APIs into Micro services-based architecture.
• Implement a caching layer wherever possible.
• Optimize the API for high performance and scalability.
• Write unit tests for API Testing.
• Automate the code testing and deployment process.

Skills Required:

1. At least 3 years of experience developing Backends using NodeJS — should be well versed with its asynchronous nature & event loop, and know its quirks and workarounds.
2. Excellent hands-on experience using MySQL or any other SQL Database.
3. Good knowledge of MongoDB or any other NoSQL Database.
4. Good knowledge of Redis, its data types, and their use cases.
5. Experience with graph-based databases like GraphQL and Neo4j.
6. Experience developing and deploying REST APIs.
7. Good knowledge of Unit Testing and available Test Frameworks.
8. Good understanding of advanced JS libraries and frameworks.
9. Experience with Web sockets, Service Workers, and Web Push Notifications.
10. Familiar with NodeJS profiling tools.
11. Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git.
12. Good knowledge of creating and maintaining DevOps infrastructure on cloud platforms.
13. Should be a fast learner and a go-getter — without any fear of trying out new things Preferences.
14. Experience building a large-scale social or location-based app.

Primary Responsibilities

• Design, architect and develop advanced software solutions in a cross functional Agile team supporting multiple projects and initiatives
• Collaborate with product owners and/or the business on requirements definition, development of functional specifications, and design
• Collaborate on or lead development of technical design and specifications as required

Skills & Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Computer Science or related field
• 3+ years of software development experience using GoLang/Java programming language

About the Backend Developer
