Job Description

This is a remote position.

Experience Level

This role is ideal for engineers with total 8+ years of experience in which around 6+ years of hands-on software development experience and 2+ years of leadership experience, with a proven track record of shipping complex projects successfully.

It aligns with the expectations of a Staff Crafter- an experienced individual contributor and leader who thrives in large, complex projects with widespread impact.

Role Overview

As a Staff Engineer (Staff Crafter), you’ll ensure that projects don’t just get built — they get shipped. You’ll be the driving force behind architecture design, technical decision-making, project delivery, and stakeholder communication.

A Staff Crafter is a multiplier for any team:

• Able to independently own ill-defined, highly ambiguous projects.
• Thinks holistically across Product, Design, Platform, and Operations to deliver highly impactful solutions.
• Shapes roadmaps to tackle complex problems incrementally.
• Raises the quality, correctness, and suitability of their team’s work, with visible impact across their business domain and beyond.
• Strong mentor, role model, and coach for other engineers.

What You’ll Do

• Lead projects end-to-end, from architecture to deployment, ensuring timely, high-quality delivery.
• Collaborate with Engineering and Product Managers to plan, scope, and break work into manageable tasks.
• Always know if the project can ship, with clear trade-offs when needed.
• Drive technical decisions with a shipping-first mindset and active participation in key meetings.
• Maintain deep knowledge of your services, identifying risks and creating mitigation strategies.
• Review code for quality and best practices, mentoring engineers to improve their craft.
• Communicate clearly with stakeholders, set realistic expectations, and build trust.
• Support and guide engineers, helping unblock issues and foster collaboration.
• Anticipate challenges, prepare fallback plans, and facilitate problem-solving.
• Keep documentation accurate, up-to-date, and accessible.

As a Staff Crafter, you will also:

• Lead highly ambiguous projects of critical business impact, balancing engineering, operational, and client priorities.
• Link technical contributions directly to business impact, helping the team and stakeholders align.
• Contribute meaningfully to team goals, with visibility into business objectives over multiple quarters.
• Ensure safe rollout of new features through incremental releases, monitoring, and metrics.
• Anticipate and mitigate risks across connected systems, ensuring minimal operational impact.

• Shape roadmaps, vision, and practices of the engineering discipline, influencing both your team and the wider business.

Requirements

What We’re Looking For

• 6+ years of software development experience with strong architectural design skills.
• 2+ years in a technical leadership role, managing pods or cross-functional teams.
• Proficiency in system design, service ownership, and technical documentation.
• Strong experience with code reviews and quality assurance practices.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Track record of delivering complex projects on time.

• 0 to 3 years of experience (or equivalent understanding of software engineering)
• Familiar with Javascript/Typescript and React.js
• Familiar with one backend language (Node, Go, Java, Python) and one relational database (any SQL)
• Willingness and interest in learning new tech/processes (Next.js, Angular, IaaS, etc.)

• Can write reliable, scalable, testable and maintainable code.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and clean code.

• Well versed with fundamentals of REST.
• Build the front-end of applications through appealing visual design.
• Knowledge of one or more front-end languages and libraries (e.g. HTML / CSS, JavaScript, XML, jQuery, Typescript) JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Angular, React, Redux, Vue.js)
• Knowledge of one or more back-end languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python, Go, Node.js and frameworks like SpringBoot, .NET Core) 
• Well versed with fundamentals of database design.
• Familiarity with databases - RDBMS like MySQL, Postgres & NoSQL like MongoDB, DynamoDB.
• Well versed with one or more cloud platforms like - AWS, Azure, GCP.
• Familiar with Infrastructure as Code - CloudFormation & Terraform & deployment tools like Docker, Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, CircleCI, Github Actions.
• Unit testing tools like Junit, Mockito, Chai, Mocha, Jest

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in development using Python OR Node.js
• Experience with React.js

• Previous experience with Shopify customization is desirable
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field

Talking Yak is an Android-based English teaching system made specifically for native Hindi and Tamil speakers.

Our program includes over 400 intelligently-structured videos, thousands of exercises, over 10,000 vocabulary words and phrases, and a system that adapts itself to each learner. In a matter of months, we can elevate most learners to a 100% functional English capability.

We’re looking for a senior developer who has a lot of passion towards solving real world problems using technology.

Our current technology stack includes Android, Python, Flask, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, ElasticSearch and AWS. While it is a bonus to have worked on the same set of above listed technologies, it is not a must until you have hands-on experience with similar technologies.

To give you an idea about what you will be working on after joining us, you will be

• Dockerizing different services and automating our AWS infrastructure provisioning steps
• Optimising our backend services to scale for a few hundreds of concurrent users
• Managing our backed service and adding new features to it
• Working on refactoring our current android codebase to a cleaner design
• Mentoring junior developers

While we feel a developer with 4 to 8 years of hands-on experience will be more suitable for this role, it shouldn't be a hard constraint if you have the required skills.
