What this role is

You are an engineer who leads projects at the scope of a service or major subsystem.

That means: when a problem lands on your desk, it's usually ambiguous. Your job is to turn it into a clear problem statement, design a system to solve it, ship it through to production, and own how it behaves once it's there. You'll work with one or two engineers on most projects, and you'll be the technical person product, ops, and other engineering teams talk to about that domain.

You're not a senior individual contributor who only writes code for assigned tickets. You're not a tech lead who's stopped writing code. You're the person between those two — still hands-on, but increasingly the one shaping what gets built.

What you'll do

• Solve 2–4 complex problems a year end-to-end: shape the problem, design the system, ship it, monitor it.
• Design single-service systems independently. Define API contracts, data models, scale and reliability requirements. Document and review your design with peers before building.
• Turn ambiguity into clarity. Take half-formed product tasks and partner with PMs to define what's actually being built. Push back when the ask doesn't make sense.
• Stay hands-on. Write code that goes into production. Drive code reviews. Debug across service boundaries. Refactor when the codebase needs it.
• Mentor 1–2 junior engineers. Be someone's first reviewer. Pair when it helps. Take their growth as your responsibility, not a side activity.
• Be in hiring. Interview candidates regularly. Help shape the interview bar for your function.
• Own outcomes, not output. Track the business or operational metric your work moves. If it doesn't move, that's a problem you own — not a problem you delivered to.

What we're looking for

• Over 4 years of professional experience in software development, specifically focused on solving large-scale technical challenges.
• Expert-level proficiency in at least one major programming language (such as Java, GO, Rust, NodeJS etc) with a focus on writing scalable, maintainable, and unit-tested code.
• Strong command of object-oriented design, design patterns, and the creation of intuitive class-level interfaces.
• Hands-on experience with multi-threading, concurrency, and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
• Deep understanding of relational databases (Postgres) and various NoSQL technologies like HBase, Elasticsearch, or Aerospike, Cassandra
• Comprehensive knowledge of the full software development life cycle on Linux platforms.
• Proven ability to build highly scalable applications that manage complex business logic and massive datasets.
• A proactive, "go-getter" mindset characterized by high energy and dedication to task ownership.
• Experience thriving in fast-paced startup environments with a strong sense of commitment and accountability.
• A passionate drive to tackle complex, real-world problems through innovative engineering.
• You've made and defended technical decisions, picked up problems no one assigned, or built things people use that no one asked for.
• Strong fundamentals in your primary stack — concurrency, data modeling, debugging across systems, performance work. We're stack-agnostic for the right person.
• Experience designing systems with explicit attention to scale, reliability, and cost — not just functional correctness.
• Collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders to monitor project outcomes and iteratively refine features based on real-world impact.

About the Role

SolarSquare is building the infrastructure for India's clean energy transition. We're looking for an Engineering Manager who doesn't just run a team — someone who builds one from the ground up, makes consequential technical bets, and treats engineering outcomes as business outcomes.

You'll own the technical strategy and delivery for our full-stack platform, lead a growing team of SDE1–SDE3 engineers, and work directly with product, design, and business to shape what we build and how fast we build it. This is a role for someone who has operated in resource-constrained environments, shipped systems that held up under pressure, and left every team they've led measurably better than they found it.

If you've only ever executed someone else's roadmap, this isn't the right fit. If you've ever built something from scratch and felt personally responsible for whether it worked.

Team & Culture

• Build, hire, and develop a high-performing full-stack engineering team  including setting the bar for what "high-performing" means at SolarSquare
• Create genuine career growth paths for engineers.

Technical Strategy

• Define and drive the architectural roadmap
• Make and own technical bets: when to invest in platform, when to ship fast, when to pay down debt
• Establish observability, reliability, and security standards before they become production fires

• Translate business goals into engineering priorities  and push back when the translation is wrong
• Set clear goals, metrics, and delivery expectations; hold yourself and the team accountable to them
• Manage trade-offs between short-term product velocity and long-term engineering health

Cross-Functional Influence

• Partner with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders  and influence decisions upstream.
• Communicate technical risk, cost, and complexity clearly to non-technical leadership

What We're Looking For

• 7–10 years of engineering experience, with at least 3 years leading teams.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems design: idempotency, retries, DLQs, circuit breakers, eventual consistency, you've had to debug these in production.
• Proven experience with event-driven architecture and Kafka including schema design, consumer group management, and failure recovery patterns.
• Comfort with relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis, ) databases  including query optimisation and schema design decisions at scale.
• You've designed or operated systems handling meaningful traffic  ideally 10K+ RPS. significant daily transaction volumes, or consumer-scale user bases (1M+ users)
• You understand what 99.99% uptime actually costs to maintain and you've made the infrastructure and on-call decisions to back it.
• You've written or enforced SLOs, SLAs, and incident management processes.
• You've done a postmortem that changed something real about how the team operates.
• Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure beyond just deploying services, cost optimisation, right-sizing, architecture decisions that meaningfully reduced spend
• Working knowledge of containerisation (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes) enough to unblock your team.
• CI/CD pipeline ownership  you've built or significantly improved a pipeline.
• Experience with observability tooling: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK, or equivalent  and more importantly, a philosophy about what to instrument and why
• You've made the call between monolith and microservices  and you can defend it with context.
• You've managed technical debt consciously: triaged it, prioritised it, and made the case to stakeholders for when to pay it down
• You've navigated a hard conversation with a product or business stakeholder  and changed the outcome
• Your engineers grow under you. You can point to people you've promoted, coached, or unblocked
• You know how to build alignment across functions where incentives don't naturally align
• You have clear examples of decisions you made under ambiguity  and you can articulate the trade-offs you weighed
• You've identified a systemic problem and fixed it without being asked
• You've built or rebuilt something that wasn't working  a team, a process, a system

About the role :

As a Staff Engineer on Data Platform, you set the technical direction for how we move, model, and serve data across the entire customer lifecycle — from real-time operational streams off thousands of field devices to the analytical layer our leaders and AI systems depend on. You operate at the scope of the platform: ambiguous problems land on your desk, and you turn them into systems the whole org builds on.

What you’ll own :

• Design and scale the data platform end to end: streaming ingestion, batch pipelines, the analytical warehouse, and a governed self-serve metrics layer.
• Build real-time operational data streams that power field operations and customer-facing experiences with low latency and high reliability.
• Own data quality, lineage, and governance — including PII handling — so teams trust the data and never dump it mindlessly.
• Define a golden metrics layer and the standards, contracts, and tooling that make analytics self-serve across the org.
• Set the bar on craft: review designs, clear data tech debt every sprint, and mentor engineers across pods.

The Tech you’ll work with :

You’ll work across event streaming (Kafka), PostgreSQL as the system of record, a columnar analytical warehouse for OLAP, Python-based pipelines, and Metabase for self-serve BI — with more workloads moving to real-time and columnar storage as we scale. We’re stack-agnostic for the right person; fundamentals matter more than any one tool.

What we’re looking for :

• 8+ years building large-scale data systems in production, with deep ownership of at least one major data platform.
• Strong command of distributed data processing and streaming architectures, plus modern columnar / analytical warehouses.
• Expert SQL and data modeling; fluency in data quality, lineage, and governance.
• Proven ability to turn ambiguous business questions into durable data models and reusable platform abstractions.
• Experience setting technical direction and growing the engineers around you.
• Customer-obsessed and impact-led: you start from the customer’s pain and judge yourself by the metric your work moves, not the tickets you close.
• High agency: you don’t wait to be told — you spot problems, pick them up, and own the outcome through to production.
• Craft over shortcuts: you fix root causes rather than symptoms, clear tech debt as you go, and don’t ship bugs.
• Bias for speed and simplicity: you build once for reuse, automate the mundane, and let AI draft the first pass so your judgment goes where it matters.
