Project: AI Training Data — Document Understanding
About the Role
We are looking for native speakers of Telugu, Malayalam, or Odia to help improve AI models' ability to understand regional-language documents.
In this role, you will annotate PDF pages by identifying document structures, labeling text and visual elements, determining reading order, and accurately transcribing content in its original script.
The project focuses on real-world documents, including newspapers, textbooks, examination papers, handwritten forms, tables, diagrams, notices, brochures, and mixed-script layouts. Strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and transcription accuracy are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Review assigned PDF pages for language, legibility, content suitability, and sensitive personal information.
- Identify and mark document regions, including titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, and answer fields.
- Assign appropriate component types and reading-order indices, including for complex, multi-column layouts.
- Link related elements, such as tables and figures, using parent component identifiers.
- Transcribe printed and handwritten text accurately in the original script.
- Maintain character-level accuracy, including script-specific characters, vowel signs, diacritics, conjunct forms, punctuation, and numerals.
- Record page metadata, including language, document type, source, dimensions, and relevant content flags.
- Flag illegible or unsuitable pages according to project guidelines.
- Review and quality-check annotations completed by other language specialists as required.
Requirements
- Native or near-native proficiency in at least one of the following languages:
- Telugu
- Malayalam
- Odia (Oriya)
- Excellent command of the relevant language's script and writing conventions.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality transcription.
- Experience in transcription, proofreading, translation, localization, data annotation, subtitling, journalism, or regional-language content review.
- Ability to interpret complex document layouts, including tables, diagrams, multi-column pages, and handwritten content.
- Ability to follow detailed guidelines and maintain consistent annotation quality.
- Reliable internet access and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with AI training data, data labeling, OCR correction, or document annotation.
- Familiarity with Unicode, regional-language typing tools, and script normalization.
- Experience in document digitization, typesetting, copy-editing, or linguistic quality assurance.
- Previous experience reviewing annotations or conducting language-quality checks.
What Success Looks Like
- All meaningful document regions are accurately identified, bounded, and classified.
- Reading order and relationships between document elements are correctly recorded.
- Text is transcribed faithfully in its original script, with minimal character-level errors.
- Annotations consistently meet project quality standards and pass expert review.
- Unsuitable or illegible pages are flagged before annotation begins.
